Yunlin County's Beigang Lantern Festival will kick off on Feb. 18. This year, there will be three main themed areas, which focus on "the sightseeing bridge," "waterways," and "alleys and lanes." The Yunlin County Government has also prepared 18,000 handheld pig lanterns to hand out to festivalgoers.

This year, many city and county governments decided against distributing handheld lanterns out of budgetary or environmental considerations. However, Yunlin County's Cultural Affairs Department says the Beigang Lantern Festival is Taiwan's oldest Lantern Festival event. To allow festivalgoers to understand the birthplace of the Lantern Festival, it specially allocated NT$ 500,000 to produce 18,000 handheld lanterns. It also hopes the Beigang Lantern Festival will be able to boost the local tourism industry.
