Yunlin County's Beigang Lantern Festival will kick off on Feb. 18. This year, there will be three main themed areas, which focus on "the sightseeing bridge," "waterways," and "alleys and lanes." The Yunlin County Government has also prepared 18,000 handheld pig lanterns to hand out to festivalgoers.


The teacher instructs the students on how to assemble the handheld lantern. The Lantern Festival is almost here, and the Yunlin County Government has prepared three different handheld pig lanterns that will be distributed for free to help people get into a celebratory mood. All people have to do to get a lantern is check in on Facebook at the Beigang Lantern Festival.

The children love it, and they can assemble it themselves. The process helps them to learn how to combine things. They also develop an appreciation for New Year-related items, and will be more eager to use them.

This year, many city and county governments decided against distributing handheld lanterns out of budgetary or environmental considerations. However, Yunlin County's Cultural Affairs Department says the Beigang Lantern Festival is Taiwan's oldest Lantern Festival event. To allow festivalgoers to understand the birthplace of the Lantern Festival, it specially allocated NT$ 500,000 to produce 18,000 handheld lanterns. It also hopes the Beigang Lantern Festival will be able to boost the local tourism industry.

We had a very limited budget, but we still managed to produce 18,000 handheld lanterns. There are three designs. People can come to the "waterways" and "the sightseeing bridge" themed areas during the Beigang Lantern Festival, which runs from Feb. 18 to Mar. 3, to get one.

The department adds this year's festival has three main themed areas. The themes are "the sightseeing bridge," "waterways," and "alleys and lanes." The festival will be open every night from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the handheld lanterns will be distributed in the themed areas.
