DPP Hopes for Younger Leadership After Election Defeat|民進黨慘敗 跨派系立委籲中生代全面接班


After the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) suffered a massive defeat in the latest local elections, many party members have been pointing figures to those responsible. Some have suggested that someone mid-aged should take over as the party chair after DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen stepped down, whereas other have suggested to have more senior members in charge. Former Premier Su Tseng-chang, said he would gladly take a supportive role to assist a younger leader. Secretary General Chen Chu also agreed to stay in office in order to continue to support President Tsai to push forward reforms.


The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidates have lost in many cities and counties in the latest local elections, and many party members have been pointing figures to those responsible. Some have suggested to have a younger candidate take over as party chair after President Tsai Ing-wen stepped down. Some also suggested that the party need to revamp its internal structure and have middled-aged members bridge the gap of communications.

If we really let a middle-aged member take over as party chair, it will leave the impression that there's party infighting within the DPP.

Some legislators suggested to have a more senior member assist the new party chair since a younger leader might not have adequate experience to lead the party. Former Premier Su Tseng-chang said that he would like to take on a supportive role along the new party chairperson.

If there's no one who plays the supportive role, and the middle-aged members of the party will be busy fighting over one another (for the party chair).

There should be an outstanding middle-aged person who takes over as the new chairperson of the party. I myself would gladly take on a supportive role.

Chen Chu, the Secretary General of the Presidential Office, agreed to stay on her position despite an earlier decision to resign. She said she will continue to assist President Tsai Ing-wen to push forward reform and to better communicate with all members of society. President Tsai said that the most important work at this key moment is to reflect on past mistakes and to steadily move forward. She said she hopes Chen Chu will work hand-in-hand with her in order to push forward reforms.
