Yang Wei-chung, former Kuomintang spokesperson, has passed away, shocking many. He had recently traveled to the Cook Islands in New Zealand for a family vacation, but drowned while trying to save his daughter during an accident. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New Zealand to provide assistance.
Yang Wei-chung's Facebook page bears the words "in memoriam." He last posted on Aug. 29, saying he was about to spend four days relaxing in the remote Cook Islands, and intended to spend that time reading and sleeping. Shortly after this post, news emerged that Yang had drowned while trying to save his daughter during a boating accident. Many of his friends and relatives left messages of condolence on his Facebook after hearing the news.
The family got along really well, and there were many examples of the interaction between him and his daughter on his Facebook, so this news was unexpected.
Yang was known as a social activist who was well-mannered and loved by friends. The 47-year-old took part in the Wild Lily Student Movement as a youth. In 2013, he joined the Kuomintang and served as spokesperson. However, during the Sunflower Student Movement, he criticized the KMT and was subsequently expelled. In 2016, he joined the Ill-Gotten Party Assets Settlement Committee as a member. Deputy Labor Minister Su Li-chiung resigned on Aug. 29, and Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun was interested in having Yang succeed Su.
I studied history, so I am more interested in the issues since the 228 Incident and the White Terror period. However, the issue of party assets is not one that you can evade.
Yang upheld his ideals with determination while he cherished his family dearly.Yang's wife Chen Yi-zhen is a former television anchor and the daughter of Nice Enterprise Co. executive Chen Jing-yao. Yang and Chen doted on their daughter.
Wei-chung worked in Taipei, so he always felt guilty about not being there for his child and family. The vacation was supposed to be a time of joy for the family, but it unexpectedly ended up being marked by tragedy.
This clip from the Taiwan program "The Theory of Love" shows Yang and Chen gazing lovingly at each other.
I really do love you a lot!
