A father-daughter pair of duck farmers from Yunlin County is under investigation for making fake avian influenza vaccines from the blood of infected ducks and selling them to poultry farms in central and southern Taiwan. Investigators discovered 500 vaccine doses at their farm, which would be enough to inject 500,000 birds. What are you doing? Hey, what are you doing? She's pouring it out. Investigators enter a duck farm in Yunlin's Dongshi Township with a search warrant in hand. They discover the daughter of the owner trying to destroy evidence by discarding poultry blood, and immediately stop her. The owner and his daughter used blood from ducks infected with avian influenza to make fake avian influenza vaccines, which they claimed could protect animals against the disease. Investigators found 514 doses of the vaccine at the farm. They took blood from ducks that survived avian influenza infection, and removed the hemoglobin and blood clotting factors to extract the serum. They then added some antibiotics and other substances to create a fake veterinary drug that they claimed would prevent avian influenza. Yunlin County prosecutors discovered the pair, surnamed Wu, also ran a slaughterhouse. Two years ago, they began collecting the blood of ducks that had survived avian influenza infection. They used a centrifuge and other equipment to extract the serum, and then added other substances. They then traveled around Yunlin, Chiayi, Changhua and Nantou to sell the vaccines to poultry farmers and inject birds. Last year, a slaughterhouse owner surnamed Zhang from Taoyuan joined them, and supplied them with duck blood. The vaccine manufacturing process was extremely simple, and right now we haven't yet been able to determine if the vaccines contained live viruses. This is a major concern in epidemic prevention. The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine says Taiwan and other developed countries all require the comprehensive culling of poultry when there are cases of avian influenza. It adds these concoctions may lead to virus mutations, which in turn could worsen the epidemic situation. It is already conducting tests on the confiscated vaccines to determine if they contain live viruses. The father and daughter surnamed Wu and six others have been detained for violating the Veterinary Drugs Control Act. Prosecutors will also identify which poultry farms administered the fake vaccines.
