TWO MISSING WOMEN ARRESTED IN KOREA FOR FRAUD SCAM|2台女赴韓失聯 外交部證實涉詐騙遭逮

3/6 First story today, two young women who told their parents that they were going to study in South Korea have been arrested by Korean police over their involvement in telephone fraud. One of women's father said when he heard about his daughter's plan to work abroad for three months, he had warned her not to get involved in anything illegal. Little did he know that that seemed to be exactly what she was planning to do. He further said that having done wrong, his daughter would have to accept the consequences. But he hoped that she would be able to be tried back in Taiwan. South Korean media reported widely on the case of the two Taiwan women who had been out of touch with their families for over ten days in Korea. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they had been arrested on Feb. 14 and 15 by South Korean police for involvement in telephone fraud. Ms. Jiang, who just turned 18 at the end of last year told her family that she was going to Korea to study. On hearing she was going for three months, her father was suspicious and had warned her not to get involved in anything illegal and be used in fraud. However, this is exactly what happened. ==MS. JIANG'S FATHER== She has done wrong, so she has to accept the legal consequences, we cannot do anything. When she arrived in Seoul on Feb. 14, Ms. Jiang contacted her father. After that there was no contact. Her family publicly appealed for help in tracing their daughter. It appears that Ms. Jiang and Ms. Deng were arrested almost as soon as they arrived in Korea. It was reported that when Ms. Jiang was first arrested she was not willing to contact the ROC representative office in Seoul. MOFA will visit her on Mar. 6. ==REPORTER and MR. JIANG== (Do you worry she will be sent to China?) I worry that she will be sent to China, of course I'm worried. We just have to see if MOFA can get them sent back to Taiwan. MOFA explained that when Taiwanese are arrested in South Korea, they are asked if they are willing to notify MOFA. As Ms. Jiang was not willing to do so, so MOFA were not notified of her arrest. As Taiwan and South Korea have not signed mutual legal assistance and extradition agreements, Taiwanese arrested in Korea and tried can only return to Taiwan after serving their full sentence in Korea. There is no record of them being sent to a third country.
