A no-kill animal shelter policy has been implemented throughout Taiwan. However, many of the receiving centers face saturation, and an increased adoption rate is the best way to relieve the pressure. In Kaohsiung more and more pet shops have cooperated with the government to help find people to adopt stray animals. Some even help with training, to raise the rate of successful adoptions. Even the Kaohsiung City Fire Department joined in with training courses for people adopting stray dogs. Let's have a look. Trainers hold treats and teach dogs basic etiquette. Two stray dogs are so afraid of people that they are trembling. Kaohsiung City stray animals' foster care park hopes that more people will see these strays in pet shops and be willing to adopt them. This pet store also helps each stray dog, by giving extra help to train them. ==CHENG PO-SUNG Pet Store Owner== To help lower return rates, we train the animals before they are up for adoption. We give them basic training to create more added-value for their adopters. This is the first Kaohsiung pet store to promote the adoption of stray dogs in their windows. It also provides adopted dogs with consumer discounts. 12 Kaohsiung pet stores responded that over 100 stray animals have been adopted over the course of the year. However, every month 100 to 200 strays enter Kaohsiung's shelters and the foster care park is close to saturation. With the no-kill animal shelter policy implemented throughout Taiwan, there is a serious need to attract more people to adopt the abandoned animals. ==HSU JUNG-PIN Director of Animal Protection, Kaohsiung City Government== We ask trainers from the Fire Department to help us train adopted stray dogs. Dog owners are welcome to be part of the program. According to municipal government statistics, the adoption rate is about 60 percent. In addition to the fire station helping to train adopted dogs, schools are also encouraged to adopt dogs, but they still need more avenues to find people willing to adopt animals.
