A National Taiwan University student from Macau, Chan Ho-Yeung was accused of abusing and killing two cats in Taipei. His act of cruelty against animals sparked a public outcry and led to his being expelled by the university. He was also sentenced to pay a fine of NT$350,000. An NTU student from Macau, Chan Ho-Yeung was indicted for abusing and killing two cats. He pleaded guilty and asked for leniency at the trial, and was sentenced to a combined prison term of 10 months, commutable to fines. He was also ordered to pay a fine of NT$350, 000. Chan can still appeal the judge's ruling. ==LIAO CHIEN-YU, Admin. Assist. to the Chief Judge, Taipei District Court== The court determined that Chan deliberately caused the deaths of the two cats. He was given a combined prison term of 10 months, commutable to fines. Based the rate of NT$2,000/day, the fine amounts to NT$600,000. He was also concurrently sentenced to a fine of NT$350,000. In December last year, Chan was charged with violations of the Animal Protection Act for killing the popular stray cat "Big Orange". In August this year, he killed another cat and was indicted again. Chan confessed to killing the cats and asked for leniency in court. On Oct. 13, he was sentenced to a combined prison term of 10 months for both cases, commutable to fines. This means Chan can pay a total fine of NT$950,000 to avoid a jail term. The French teacher who used to feed Big Orange found the ruling unacceptable. ==WITNESS== I am really disappointed. We have worked so hard for a year. My Big Orange is still kept in the morgue and waiting for justice that never came. Taipei District Court said that although Chan has committed violent animal abuse, his diagnosis has confirmed that he has mental illness, and he has also confessed to his crimes. In light of these considerations, the court gave him a 10-month sentence. The enforcement prosecutor will determine if his prison term will be commuted to fines.
