COVID-19 patients share stories about their symptoms after recovery, including problems with memory, fatigue, cough, commonly known as Long COVID. According to WHO's estimate, about 20 percent of COVID-19 patients develop Long COVID symptoms. As for Taiwan, according to a KMT legislator, there are currently 2.8 million people infected with COVID-19. With the estimated unreported confirmed cases, the actual number of COVID-19 infections should be around 6 million. The New Taipei City Chinese Medical Doctors' Association analyzed that there could be up to 300,000 people who may suffer from Long COVID.

Zhan Yi-neng, Chairperson, New Taipei City Chinese Medical Doctors' Association: “You may be absent-minded, with the tightness of your chest and panting while walking. Sometimes people get rashes on their skin, cannot sleep, or have heart palpitations. Medication can be taken without worrying about women thinking it is too "cold" since there is a proper dosage. We will control it for you, or if during menstruation we will adjust the amount. ”

Specific Long COVID symptoms include headache, body soreness and ache, brain fog, insomnia, and heart palpitations. In respect of Taiwan confronting the Long COVID peak around July and August, the Association called out to the government to embark on forward planning and open up Long COVID outpatient services. It also pointed out that traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture may help to modify the patient's body constitution and boost immunity, speeding up recovery.

Hsieh Bo-jun, Attending Physician, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital: “Severe cases that required oxygen treatment or intubation at hospitals tend to recover slower. Chinese medicine comes in perfect at this time to help with breathing and muscle deterioration problems. All these can be improved by Chinese medicine.  ”

One traditional Chinese medicine practitioner believed that acupressure can boost immunity and improve Long COVID symptoms. A legislator pointed out that a lot of COVID-19 patients are children and teenagers, who may experience long-term effects, thus the Ministry of Health and Welfare must follow up with long-term observation and research.
