Tainan Booster Vaccine Coverage of 65 Years and Older Lowest 65歲以上追加劑覆蓋率 六都以台南最低

Tainan's coverage rate of booster vaccines for the elderly is the lowest in the six special municipalities and has come up with an incentive to encourage the elderly to get vaccinated.

The staff handed the yellow card and two COVID-19 rapid tests to the patient after she received a shot of the vaccine. The local epidemic is rapidly increasing, making it difficult to obtain a rapid test kit. This is exactly the incentive to encourage the elderly over 65 to get vaccinated.

Citizen: “Of course, it's good to get it for free. You don't have to wait in line.”

Huang Wei-che, Tainan City Mayor: “The number of people vaccinated every day now is probably only 3,000 to 4,000 people. I believe it's really hard to get mass vaccination coverage based on these numbers so we came up with this incentive plan.”

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, except for Tainan, the coverage rate of booster shots for the elderly aged 65-74 in the other five special municipalities is over 70 percent, and the coverage rate of the elderly over the age of 75 is over 60 percent. Tainan's coverage rate is only 66.5 percent and 52.3 percent in the two age groups. It is the lowest of all six special municipalities. Tainan is offering two quick screening tests to the elderly to be vaccinated, to increase their willingness to get the shots.

Dr. Chiang Chien-lin, Director, Rende District Public Health Center, Tainan City: “If you are 65 or older, whether you get your first dose, second dose, or the booster dose at a private or the city's health center, you can come to the city's health center to receive quick screening tests within three days of receiving your shot.”

However, there was a misunderstanding in the morning. Some people who had been vaccinated before May 9, the start of the program, could not receive free quick screening tests.

Citizen: “This is very troublesome. Really. This is so inappropriate.”

The elderly man was a little angry that he couldn't receive quick screening tests. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che emphasized that adults over 65 years old are more likely to have severe, even deadly, coronavirus infection, so he recommends that elders receive vaccines to protect them.
