A two-year-old who was recently diagnosed with COVID died on Monday. He was the first child in Taiwan to suffer severe symptoms and rapid progression of COVID since the start of the pandemic.
Hou Yu-ih, New Taipei City Mayor: “The saddest news arrived during my meeting. Our 2-year-old boy passed in the middle of the night. It really breaks my heart.”
New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih seemed to have tears in his eyes and was choking on words. A 2-year-old boy from New Taipei City got tested positive for COVID-19 on the 14th and was sent to the hospital immediately. He soon developed into a severe case. Shuang Ho Hospital pronounced the boy dead early morning on the 19th from having developed brainstem encephalitis as a complication of COVID-19 infection. The boy's parents were beside him when he passed after six days of emergency treatment.
Hou Yu-ih, New Taipei City Mayor: “All the doctors of pediatric critical care from Shuang Ho Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital have gathered together as soon as possible to treat the little boy. New Taipei City government and the health department have also been doing everything possible to assist. However, we were still unable to save the boy and we feel deeply sorry.”
Hou felt sad and questioned himself about the tragedy. He said he would make sure that both the little boy's parents are well-taken care of since they are still under hospitalization.
Hou is also calling on the central government to quickly come up with adjustments to the current disease control regulations to better suit the current situation of COVID-19 infections in Taiwan. The central government will be holding a conference with pediatric specialists on the 20th to discuss special considerations for better treatment of children with COVID-19.
