Team Develops 「Coronavirus-clearing」 Concoction 預防新冠肺炎 陽明交大開發中藥「淨冠方」

Can Chinese medicine be used to treat COVID-19? National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University researchers gave five herbal medicines to 1,000 frontline medical personnel, with ninety percent of them reporting positive feeback.

This is a decoction comprising the five herbal medicines of Baikal skullcap, Chinese thorowax root, huoxiang, forsythia suspensa, and magnolia. It is called "coronavirus-clearing concoction," and was developed by a team at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's Institute of Traditional Medicine for use against COVID-19. In 2020, the researchers gave the concoction to over 1,000 medical personnel. Many reported an improvement in cold symptoms such as throat pain, coughing, and headaches.

Hsu Chung-hua, Professor, Institute of Traditional Medicine, NYCU: “Using it in high-risk situations can lead to weakening, purifying, preventing infections, and even reducing symptoms.”

The team conducted animal tests to determine the scientific mechanism. It found that two days after ingesting the concoction, the expressions of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the lung cells of mice were significantly reduced. These two proteins that are found on cell membranes are the receptors that the coronavirus binds to.

Lin Tung-yi, Asst. Professor, Institute of Traditional Medicine, NYCU: “The concoction first treats lung cells or host cells, and then the viral infection, and the infection ability will be weakened.”

The concoction can be delivered into the nasal cavity as vapor for rapid absorption in the lungs and improvement in cold symptoms. The team says it can make viruses weaker and prevent infection. It adds that the concoction can't replace vaccines, and the university will authorize it for public use in line with the method used for the AZ vaccine.
