Possible Financial Bonuses for Reserve Soldiers 後備軍人召集優待條例審查 教召5次有獎

The Legislative Yuan reviewed the draft bill for reservists, which stipulates that those who have been summoned five times for military refresher programs will receive bonuses.

There has been a discussion about whether to extend the mandatory military service period, due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Although it has not yet been finalized, the discussion has caused panic among parents and draftees. There is even a rumored trend of rushing to join the draft because of the extended service period from the current four months. Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng apologized and stressed there will be an adjustment time.

Chiu Kuo-cheng, Minister of National Defense: “I really want to apologize to you all. I don't have a definite answer yet. But we're carrying out our planning according to schedule so it's not so outrageous, right? So this doesn't mean if you join the military service one day later, your service time will become one year. I'm pretty sure this won't happen.”

The extension of military service has not yet been finalized. At present, Kaohsiung's Navy and Hsinchu's Guanxi New Recruit Training Center have reported officers and soldiers diagnosed with the virus. Will this affect the current military refresher training? Chiu said that the refresher programs will not be affected and the military will carry out epidemic prevention measures.

Chiu Kuo-cheng, National Defense Minister: “We have already processed these two cases that have been reported. About 80 percent of our military has received the third vaccine booster shot. Priority was given to service members in culinary work and confined spaces such as radar stations and sailors onboard ships. The booster vaccine coverage rate for these service members has reached more than 98 percent.”

The Legislative Yuan's National Defense Committee also reviewed a draft bill on convening preferential treatment to reserve soldiers. The Defense Ministry believes as the CCP continues to threaten Taiwan with force, it is necessary to improve the reserve force's combat readiness. The draft stipulates that reserve soldiers will be exempted from the registration fee for medical treatment within one year after the reserve soldier's convocation has been canceled. Those who have been called and completed five military refresher training programs will be given financial bonuses. The amount of bonus is still being discussed in the draft law.
