228 Group Calls for Removal of Statue from CKS Memorial Hall 228家屬籲移除中正紀念堂銅像 蔡:審慎推動

This year's central 228 memorial event was held in Keelung. A 228 family representative called for the removal of Chiang Kai-shek's statue from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. President Tsai Ing-wen said she will carefully promote "transitional" work. 

The central memorial event for the 75th anniversary of the 228 Incident was held in Keelung. The government says the location is very significant because Keelung is where Kuomintang forces landed on Taiwan and began suppressing and massacring people. A 228 family representative, meanwhile, called for the removal of Chiang Kai-shek's statue from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

Kao Chao-hung, 228 Family Representative: “The tax money paid by these victims is being spent on maintaining this memorial hall. How can this be? Can the people that support Chiang Kai-shek come and take him away since they love him so much?”

During her address, President Tsai Ing-wen said democratic countries should not memorialize authoritarians and she will carefully promote "transitional" work at CKS Memorial Hall.

Tsai Ing-wen, ROC President: “Apart from transitional work at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, we are also promoting my principle of democratic countries not memorializing past presidents that were authoritarians.”

Tsai also said Taiwan has to stand united to face challenges like Ukraine.

 

二二八事件75週年，中樞紀念儀式移師基隆舉行，地點選在市民廣場。因為基隆港區就是國民政府軍上岸，展開鎮壓屠殺的地點，具有特別意義。二二八家屬代表致詞時，再度呼籲移除中正紀念堂銅像。

二二八家屬代表高兆弘表示：「我們這群受害者付的稅金，還要拿來維護這個紀念堂，是情何以堪。如果有一些人是支持蔣介石的，那是不是請他們把喜歡的蔣介石，拿回去自行安置。」

先前總統蔡英文因為出席蔣經國紀念園區活動發言引發議論，蔡總統致詞強調民主國家不該紀念威權。對於中正紀念堂轉型議題，明確表示會審慎來推動。

總統蔡英文說：「包括中正紀念堂的轉型工作在內，我們也會審慎的來推動，一個民主國家，我們不該再以威權的形式來紀念卸任的總統，這是我們的原則。」

面對烏克蘭情勢，蔡總統也呼籲，看到烏克蘭人民捍衛自己國家主權，台灣也需要團結一致才能面對挑戰，而民主是唯一選項。
