The upcoming Kaohsiung mayoral by-election will be a three-way race between DPP's Chen Chi-mai, KMT's Li Mei-jhen, and the TPP's surprising candidate Wu Yi-jheng, who has been a long term member of the People First Party. TPP Chairperson Ko Wen-je is expected to travel to Kaohsiung to stump for him as the election approaches.
Chen Chi-mai, the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for the upcoming Kaohsiung City mayoral by-election, campaigned at a traditional market on June 26. He was also there to meet with one of his biggest fans, who had supported him in the 2018 mayoral election, which Chen ultimately lost.
If I have the opportunity to be elected mayor, then I will definitely change the employment of young people, such as getting large global manufacturers to invest in Kaohsiung, turning Kaohsiung and Tainan into a science and technology corridor, and accelerating the transformation of traditional industries.
Chen specifically made promises about the transformation of traditional industries and youth employment, as the DPP fears Taiwan People's Party candidate Wu Yi-jheng will take youth votes away from Chen with the assistance of Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je. Meanwhile, Kuomintang candidate Jane Lee is also aiming to garner youth votes. Wu previously said the central government allocated NT$80 billion less in national tax revenues to Kaohsiung then it should have. Lee said she would fight to get it instead of waiting for the central government to take action.
Chen Chu and Chen Chi-mai both went to work in the central government, but did not fight to get this allocation for Kaohsiung. Wu Yi-jheng is still passively hoping that we can get the allocation. I will go out and fight for it, so please support me.
Chen found it hard to campaign without mentioning recalled Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu. He said the KMT rehiring Han's administrative team would be equivalent to nullifying the result of the recall vote. In response, Lee said she would aim to retain talented functionaries as well as launch new policies.
