The Centers for Disease Control has announced seven new cases of dengue fever. Six are in Taichung and one is in Kaohsiung. In tracing the history of the cases, it found that a 60-year-old female patient in Taichung's Taiping District Xinguang Borough began experiencing symptoms including fever in mid-August. There were questions whether the woman hid her condition. The Taichung City Health Bureau says it found no evidence she intentionally tried to hide anything and it will not fine her. The new case in Kaohsiung, meanwhile, may or may not be related to torrential rains on Aug. 23; it requires further clarification.
On the 6th, health workers disinfected Taichung's Happy Farm for the third time.
We are disinfecting here for the third time because the (mosquito vector) index is above zero. After sterilizing the farm, we will clear away all possible mosquito breeding sources.
The Centers for Disease Control has announced seven new endemic cases of dengue fever, including six in Taichung and one in Kaohsiung. It traced the Taichung outbreak to a 60-year-old woman in Xinguang Borough, who developed a fever in mid-August. The local health bureau says there is no evidence she tried to hide her condition.
(Based on our understanding), the woman wasn't experiencing any discomfort before then. On Sept. 2, we expanded the scope of our investigation and asked her to get a blood test. It was only then that she remembered she'd seen a doctor in mid-August for cold-like symptoms.
Health workers also disinfected National Chiayi University after an overseas Chinese student from Malaysia was diagnosed with a case of imported dengue fever. The endemic case in Kaohsiung reported on the 5th, meanwhile, involves a patient who fell ill on the 1st. Health authorities are unsure how the patient got infected and whether the case is related to torrential rain on Aug. 23.
You can see from the map that they live just 300 meters away from each other. Infection spreads quickly within communities and there is a risk of a further outbreak.
The CDC says dengue fever spreads quickly in communities and people that hide their condition can be fined up to NT$ 15,000. Anyone with symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
