NEWLY-FORMED PARTY WINS TOKYO CITY COUNCIL|

People in Tokyo headed to the polls on July 2 to elect the City's Assembly. Tomin First party, an upstart formed by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, together with her allies, won 79 seats out of the assembly's 127 seats and obtained a rather comfortable majority. Following the victory, Koike announced her resignation as the party's leader, saying that she will need to concentrate on governing the metropolis. Spirits were high at the Tomin First party's campaign headquarters for the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election as one candidate after another won seats. The upstart party, founded by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, nominated 50 candidates and supported 6 independent candidates; 55 of these candidates were elected. Two allied parties also won 24 seats, giving Koike's alliance 79 seats, far exceeding the threshold for a majority. ==YURIKO KOIKE Governor, Tokyo Metropolis== I am glad that Tomin First candidates have been elected. We have heard the voices of local citizens, and our elected assembly members will need to work hard. Japanese media analysis pointed out that the Tomin First party ran on the platform of revolutionizing Tokyo, and that Koike's approval ratings far exceed that of Shinzo Abe's government, which was reflected in these election results. ==SHUN OTOKITA Reelected Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Member== We must abandon the old forces that have dominated the Assembly. Please put your support behind the reform of the Tomin First party so that we can have the advantage we need. The ruling Liberal Democratic party, tainted by scandal and controversy, suffered a grave defeat and won only 23 seats, down from 57. Assembly president Toshiaki Yoshino was among the casualties. ==HAKUBUN SHIMOMURA Acting Chair, LDP Tokyo Headquarters== I will take responsibility and resign as chair. ==TOSHIHIRO NIKAI Chair, LDP Central Headquarters== The LDP has been harshly judged by citizens both in Tokyo and nationally. We must think deeply on our mistakes. The Democratic Party of Japan, the biggest opposition party in the Japanese Diet, was thoroughly marginalized in the contest between Koike and the LDP. It is down to five seats in the Assembly and is facing an intra-party rift. Translated by JOHN CHEN
