To solve the problem of illegal residential structures built on farmland, Yilan County recently started to demolish buildings in Chaoxi and Wujie. Yesterday morning Yilan County government officials went to Yuanshan to demolish an illegal structure. The property owner was pretty upset and called Minister of Agriculture Lin Tsong-hsien a tyrant.
A bulldozer started to demolish this 85 ping residential building, worth NT$13 million, in Yuanshan, while its owner could only look on at the destruction. Before it was demolished, the owner had made continuous protests at the county government. On June 12, he could only put up yellow banners around the property, denouncing Minister of Agriculture Lin Tsong-hsien as a tyrant. Lin was previously Yilan County magistrate and the owner accused the current acting county magistrate Wu Shih-cheng as manipulating land policy for political favor.
What I am unhappy about is today you have this sort of despotic policy, like a communist country and you don't give citizens a right or way to respond.
The farm storehouse of 45 square meters was legal, the rest of the 280 square meters was an illegal structure. The owner admitted that part of the structure was illegal but was unhappy that before demolishing the illegal part, the county government had no measures in place for doing so. However, the Yilan County government says that it notified the owner that it would be demolished in September 2015 and in October fined him NT$60,000. However, the owner took no notice and in April, the county government served notice that it should be demolished within one month. The owner applied for an extension but did not demolish it himself. Thus the county government decided to demolish it.

He promised to demolish it himself, but he didn't, so today we did so as it was an illegal structure.
The property owner was unhappy that with over 300 illegal structures in Yilan County, his was one of the first to be demolished. Officials responded that they would carry on demolishing illegal structures on farmland to a set timetable.
