PAN-DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE LOST, PROTEST VOTES CAST|

Civic groups in Hong Kong rallied outside the convention center where the election for the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region election was underway. They were protesting China's involvement in the choice of candidates. Results showed that the pan-democratic camp's strategy of concentrating support for candidate John Tsang was not successful. Electors who cast invalid ballots to protest the election called on the public to continue demonstrating for universal suffrage next Sunday, April 2 at China's Liaison Office. A crowd of several hundred gathered by the Civil Human Rights Front attempted to protest in the election site in Hong Kong against China's interference in the election. However, they were blocked by police. A pro-China group conducted a counter-protest saying that they supported the election. The two sides shouted slogans at each other. Several electors said after the election that they had cast spoiled ballots. The results showed that Carrie Lam won more votes than C. Y. Leung did in the last election. Legislator and elector Nathan Law said that this showed Chinese interference in the results and a concerted effort to make the pan-democrat strategy fail. ==NATHAN LAW Hong Kong Legislator== We need to think and reflect on our strategies, because our assumptions did not come true. As China's preferred candidate, Carrie Lam won the election despite trailing in the polls to her opponent John Tsang. Academics say that Tsang's loss means that the discontent felt by Hong Kong society toward China has no electoral outlet, and that more conflict may ensue over the next five years. ==MA NGOK Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong== She didn't have enough support in society. If she relied on the support of the Liaison Office and Beijing, she'll continue to rely on them after her election. In the future, this will also be quite destructive to "one country, two systems. Civil groups dissatisfied with China's interference in the election are calling on supporters to demonstrate in front of the Liaison Office for universal suffrage. TRANSLATED BY:JOHN CHEN
