CHINA KICKS OFF TWO ANNUAL TOP POLITICAL SESSIONS|中共兩會登場 軍費增幅.一帶一路 各國關注焦點

China's National People's Congress will kick off this weekend, with over 3,000 lawmakers descending on Beijing for the annual parliamentary pageant. Last year's agenda was headlined by China's five-year development plan. While the 2017 program may not be as momentous, there are still plenty to follow. Likely topics include Hong Kong politics, China's economy, the blueprint of the One Belt One Road initiative and of course, the new U.S. president. Security has been increased for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress as they are held at a sensitive time, where the 19th National Party Congress to be held later this year will see China's leadership transition. Prior to the two meetings, the Islamic State had released a video, in which Uighur militants threatened to shed rivers of blood in China. This was the first terrorist threat that China received. It is reported that China has deployed armored cars in Beijing's Chaoyang District and armed police force in Xinjiang. The focus of the two meetings, however, will be on China's economic development. According to a Bloomberg report, China is likely to set its economic growth target to between 6 and 7%, which shows Beijing's higher tolerance to its economic slowdown. However, Chinese officials emphasized on a press conference on March 2 that China has regained the title of the fastest growing major economy. ==WANG GUOQING, CPPCC Spokesperson == We have every reason to believe that China has the strongest economic momentum in the world in the coming year. Facing President Trump's inauguration, South China Sea dispute and South Korea's deployment of THAAD, China's growth in military spending announced during the two meetings will also receive the attention from the public. Issues concerned by people in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong include how China will treat Taiwanese people in China and Hong Kong Chief Executive election.
