US-JAPAN SM-3 Block IIA missile test-fires successfully / 美日合作BMD 標三最新型試射成功          

Meanwhile, A test launch of US/Japan-made anti-ballistic SM-3 missiles in the Pacific Ocean has gone off successfully. The test was conducted jointly by Japan and the United States, with the missiles, designed as part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, successfully hitting a hypothetical hostile target. These new missiles will be available for deployment by 2020. At 4 pm of Feb. 4 Taiwan time, US Navy USS John Paul Jones conducted the launches for three latest types of missile including SM-3 Block IIA. The newest type missiles were equipped with rockets and were able to carry warheads to the atmosphere 200 kilometers above the earth. The warheads use little rockets for adjusting direction, intercepting and destroying enemy's missile. The missile speed was many times greater than sonic speed. ==NHK MORNING NEWS== SM-3 Block IIA has improved its detector, upgrading its capability of intercepting enemy's ballistic missile. The missile carries more rocket fuels, therefore its firing range and protection are improved as well. That was the third intercept test for SM-3 Block IIA, and was the first time conducted over the water. The SM-3 missile successfully scored a bull's eye. ==NHK MORNING NEWS== Ministry of Defense stated, there will be another intercepting test on the sea, for further radar analysis. The production will begin by next fiscal quarter (of 2017). The new SM-3 type missile will be available for deployment before 2020, preventing possible missile attack from North Korea. The U.S.-Japan Ballistic Missile Defense System has long been opposed by China and Russia as they were being treated as simulated enemies.
