The number of applicants for the national examinations plummeted to less than 500,000 this year. For the past 5 years, the numbers went from 800,000 470,000 which is a 40% decline. Scholars believe, it has something to do with pension reform, economic performance and low birth rate. In 2008, the worldwide economic recession saw many unemployed middle-aged apply for government employment. The number of applicants rises year by year. It hit a record high of 800,000 in 2012. However, it has been in decline ever since, and this year it plummets to only 470,000, a record low for a decade. ==LI LAI HSI, National Civil Servant Association Chairman== The atmosphere of the society is not friendly to the civil servants. The actual salaries and benefits are not as good as they used to be. Now there is a cut in the pension and annulment of legitimate expectation. That's why talented people are not willing to be civil servants. The reasons for the low number of applicants are: low birth rate, pension reform and the atmosphere of the society. Some cram schools believe, on the other hand, this is a perfect timing for those who are willing to apply for government employment. ==HUNG LIANG HUI, Chih Kuang Cram School== It has been a watershed for the past years because the number of applicants is relatively low compared to the high number of job vacancies. So the acceptance rate is higher. ==MEMBER OF PUBLIC== The government will still protect the basic benefits of the civil servants. If not, there will be no difference between civil servants and other workers. If talented people do not apply for government employment, no one will do the job. So, there will still be basic protection. The public are optimistic about the future of government employment. After all, job security still appeals to most people if compared to the jobs in private sectors. Both the public and private sectors need talented people and how to strike a balance poses a challenge to the government.
