Kaohsiung has its first Zika virus infection case this year. One junior high school student visited Vietnam and got bit by mosquitoes. His urine sample was tested positive of Zika virus infection. Kaohsiung Department of Health reminds the public: Vietnam, Singapore, Central America and South America are epidemic areas for Zika virus, pregnant women need to pay extra attentions when travelling to these areas.

We examined the number of Zika virus in his urine sample is much higher than in blood. Therefore we deduce that the chance of Zika virus infection in his urinary system is very high. The risk may remain for around six months.

This junior high school student last month visited Vietnam with his mother and sister. He said that he was bit by mosquitoes and had fever, rash and red-eyes after returning to Taiwan. He was being treated in hospital. Authority enforced disinfection around the student's residence in order to prevent disease from breaking out.

On July 13, we inspected breeding sources within 50-meter range. Today we expanded to 400 meters. Tomorrow we are to enforce indoor inspections.

The student's mother and sister have no symptom, but authority is closely monitoring the two individuals. Kaohsiung Department of Health reminds the public, Vietnam, Singapore, Central and South Americas are epidemic areas for Zika virus. Pregnant women need to take extra precautions, as the virus would lead to microcephaly to babies.
