May 20th marks President Tsai Ing-wen's first anniversary in office. Many reforms that the Tsai administration is trying to push forward also face fierce opposition, which inevitably affects her approval rating. The latest poll showed that over 54% are not satisfied with President Tsai's performance. In response, President Tsai said the low approval rating is expected but the reforms will continue since they are vital for Taiwan's future development.

On the eve of President Tsai's inauguration anniversary, the DPP released its latest poll which showed that 57.4% of the respondents supported President Tsai while 37.4% did not. The same poll also showed that only 42.2% of the respondents were satisfied with the President's performance and more than 50% were dissatisfied. President Tsai stated that she had seen this coming but will continue the reforms.

==TSAI ING-WEN R.O.C. President==
Most of the people supported me but were not satisfied with me. I will take it with an open mind. I am a leader under a democratic political system with a strong will to push forward reforms. We are doing things that the past administrations wanted to do but could not do. The reforms will not stop here. This is my order to my administration team.

On the pension reform, President Tsai stressed that it is worth using one year to solve a long-term problem and that the judicial reform will not fall by the wayside. Addressing ill-gotten party assets will allow a fair election in 2018. On cross-strait issues, the President urged that the government across the strait face new circumstances.

==TSAI ING-WEN R.O.C. President==
I hope that the leaders from the other side can make a correct interpretation of last year's election result in Taiwan. Since last year, Taiwan has been extending a good will. Let's not dwell on the past standoffs. Let's address new challenges ahead.

In light of the present standstill in cross-strait relations and diplomatic status quo, the KMT think tank criticized that the Tsai Administration's steadfast diplomacy has been unrealistic and that the strategy to unite the US and Japan against China has a blind spot.

==FRANCISCO OU Former Minister of Foreign Affairs==
It's neither steadfast nor pragmatic. Why is that? Because President Tsai has not seen the new circumstances facing both sides and the status quo in the international community.

==YANG CHENG-TA Former Ambassador to Haiti==
It sounded a bit self-bragging and ignorant of the objective reality that we are an equal member of the international community, who has been treated asymmetrically.

Scholars also pointed out that the cross-strait relations have affected Taiwan's diplomatic landscape. The government's New Southbound Policy that targets ASEAN countries will also be put under greater scrutiny.
