FIJI'S SHUTDOWN OF TAIWAN OFFICE RAISES CROSS-STRAIT DIPLOMATIC TENSION|

The south Pacific island nation of Fiji has shut down its representative office in Taiwan on the eve of the anniversary of President Tsai's inauguration. Coupled with Taiwan's snub from the World Health Assembly this year, speculation of a new Cross-Strait diplomatic war is rising. Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chang Hsiao-yueh issued a vigorously worded statement today saying that China's denial of the ROC will only lead to feelings of resentment among the Taiwanese people, which is the opposite of China's stated hope of winning hearts and minds across the Strait. She also said that China's demands that southeast Asian countries sign joint communiqués supporting the one China policy ignore reality.

Fiji's sudden withdrawal of its representative office from Taiwan has raised diplomatic tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's exclusion from international meetings, the loss of São Tomé and Príncipe as a diplomatic ally last year, an order by Nigeria to close Taiwan's representative office in the country, and the recent snub from the WHA all show China's increased pressure on Taiwan's international space. Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chang Hsiao-Yueh made a personal media appearance on May 18 to rebuke China.

Denying that the ROC exists completely contradicts China's stated aim of winning hearts and minds across the Strait. It will only push the two sides further away from each other.

The Mainland Affairs Council also released opinion polls showing that over 80% of the public is in favor of continuing positive interactions across the Strait and 70% support a new approach to cooperation based on good will. In regards to the WHA snub, 70% support the government's protests and over 80% believe that China's actions are unhelpful for cross-strait relations. The MAC also said that China is ignoring reality by using the "Belt and Road Initiative" as leverage to sign one-China policy communiqués with Vietnam and Cambodia.

(Making them) support the one-China principle ignores reality. We would never accept this one-China principle.

Chang said that China's unilateral breaking off of communications with Taiwan, as well as its lack of transparency regarding the detained Taiwanese activist Lee Ming-cheh, are only causing resentment in the Taiwanese public as well as attracting international attention. She called on China to make Lee's location known and to allow his family to visit, and for China to resume communications and dialogue as soon as possible.
