A policeman has died and two were seriously injured after one gunman opened fire with an AK-47 in central Paris, just days ahead of France's presidential election. Paris police spokeswoman said the attacker targeted police on the Champs-Elysees shopping district. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Witnesses said a man stepped from a car and opened fire on a police vehicle. The Belgian attacker who was shot dead is thought to have been known to security services for his "extremist links". His house in east Paris is being searched by officers. Police said the circumstances of the shooting had "not been determined" while French President Francois Hollande said he is convinced the circumstances of the Paris shooting points to a terrorist act.
